Glory Review

I remember back when I was 11 years old. I was sitting in my room watch the …Baby One More Time video for the first time. I wondered to myself if this girl would be another one hit wonder or will she be the next big thing. Well 17 years, 9 albums, sold out world tours, a Las Vegas residency, countless awards, 100 million albums and singles sold worldwide later, I think it’s safe to say she’s here to stay.
Last week, Britney Spears released her ninth studio album, ‘Glory’. Many describe the album as the infant of her twoprevious albums ‘Blackout’ and ‘In The Zone’. Spears has been working on ‘Glory’ since 2014. She stated that she took her time and was very hands on the with the album. Although taking a slight step away from the dance heavy bops she’s known for, the album doesn’t lack substance.
Before we get into the tracks, I hate this cover. It’s a still from her ‘Make Me’ video and just seems so not Britney. Second, I also hate the title. Why Glory? What’s so special about that title? Anyway…
The opening track ‘Invitation’ is an enchanting introduction to this new era. The song is sensual and smooth just like her vocals over the beat. I love it.
Next we move into the lead single from the album, ‘Make Me…’ The sexy number is reminiscent to fan favorite ‘Breathe On me’ from the “In The Zone’ album. The track is assisted by rapper G-Easy. I sometimes wonder why she opts for more unknown rappers than bigger names that could give her a bigger push. His bars are a bit forgettable, but I still I like the song.
‘Private Show’ comes in at number 3. I actually love this better than the lead single. The doo wop feel of the song has the track on repeat on my IPhone. I love it. I personally thought this would have made a perfect album title. But that’s just me.
“Dark mascara running down my face…” the opening line of the feel good 4th track ‘Man on The Moon’. I love this song, but I don’t see it getting the single treatment. I would however like to see a live performance of the song.
Continuing through Glory brings number 5 ‘Just Luv Me’. This unlike the previous song, I could see as a single. It has commercial appeal. It’s chill and sensual complementing the tone of the album. Although a live performance could be a bit boring if she doesn’t think outside the box. I love this song as well.
Released as the second promotional song from the album, ‘Clumsy’ brings the dancefloor to Glory. Not as taunting as ‘Toxic’ or fist pumping like ‘Til The World Ends’ but great in its own right. Clumsy had to grow on me, Now I love the infectiousbeat and I can’t help but move! Love it!
Track 7, also serving as the third promotional song from Glory is ‘Do You Wanna Come Over’. The song is a miss for me.Actually, I hate it. Although Spears appears to love the song, even adding the song to her ‘Piece of Me’ show. I am praying the song NEVER makes the single treatment. It’s no for me.
‘Slumber Party’ comes in at number 8, and is by far my favorite on the album. Fans have voted on many polls for this to be the next single. The song feels hypnotic. It has a slight tropical feel.It’s Something I haven’t heard from her in a while. I love it.
‘Just Like Me’ feels like an album filler. The guitar at the beginning is an illusion. The song takes a slight turn in structure. And is reminiscent to a thrown away Justin Bieber beat. The song is ok.
‘Love Me Down’ is also voted high on the polls for next single. I can see why. The song is addictive. It has commercial appeal and it’s catchy. I love it.
Track 11, ‘Hard To Forget Ya’ is also another catchy tune. I personally don’t see this as a single or a song to be performed. Nice album track though, I like it.
‘What You Need’ comes in fierce and strong. She does exactly what the song says, she “brings out the diva inside…” This song would be an amazing addition to her live show. Killer routine and she’ll be in there!
‘Better’ feels like another left over Justin Bieber track. The song is cute; it feels like an album filler. It’s ok.
‘Change Your Mind (No Seas Cortes) is track 14. Is another catchy song. The song reminds me of being in a dark club and slow grinding with a stranger. You’re 4 drinks in and just vibinto the music. I like it.
‘Liar’ comes in at number 15. The first time I heard this song it screamed SINGLE. It sounds a bit angry, and dancey! I’d love to see the video for this. I think she could kill this live as well. Love it!
You know we can’t reach near the end of a Britney album without something for the clubs! ‘If I’m Dancing’ is one of my favorites. It makes me wanna prance and dance! The song was made for the clubs! I love it!
Bringing Glory to a “glorious’ close is the track almost EVERY fan was intrigued about…’Coupure Electrique’. Which if you didn’t know translates to ‘Blackout’…see the excitement. Did anyone else wonder, “How in the hell is she doing this????” lol The song sounds as enchanting as the opening number. But more intense. I love it although I have no idea what the hell she’ssaying. It’d be interesting to see her attempt this live…
Overall Spears served up a pretty good album. And she truly had no choice after the disappointment that was ‘Britney Jean’….so let’s crunch the numbers…
Every like/love gets a point
Oks get a half point
And the absolute nos…get nothing
Likes/Loves=14
Oks=2
Nos=1
15/17=88%
I give ‘Glory’ a B!!!
B for Britney lol, good job Britney! Let’s work out that world tour now!
